A Guide to Having Fun on a Weekend Getaway

Kaitlyn Fusco

Every now and then, we all need to take some time to relax and recharge. Sometimes, that means taking a long weekend getaway. With just a couple days to enjoy yourself, it is easy to go from feeling ecstatic to feeling overwhelmed. Here are a couple tips to help make sure your getaway is everything it should be…and more.

List Your Top 5 To-dos. When you take a trip somewhere you’ve never been, the amount of places to go and the activities you want to do can start to overwhelm you. Instead of insisting on seeing every landmark, every art gallery, every museum and stepping foot on every beach, narrow down your list to the top 5 things you and your travel partners would like to see and do on your vacation. Make realistic goals of what you can accomplish in a couple days. To help make this list, ask yourself what you’re hoping to get from this vacation. If you’re looking to relax, you can include a beach day at one of the best beaches in town, and if you’re looking for adventure, make sure to include activities such as zip lining or white water rafting to your schedule, but include some resting time, too. After all, overloading your schedule can make you feel like you need a vacation from your vacation.

Book a Hotel Close to Your Top 5. Chances are you’d rather spend your vacation fulfilling the top 5 things you’ve set out to do on your vacation, rather than spending half the day hailing taxis to get from point A to point B. If you’re visiting a big city, but staying in a hotel further out, transportation can often take valuable time away from your time off. Once you’ve decided on what you want to do during your stay, make sure you know the location of the hotel that best fits your needs.

Pack Light. Nothing can ruin a vacation like finding out your checked bag to Memphis, Tennessee is actually on its way to Memphis, Egypt. Not to mention it could take several days to get your luggage, leaving you bag-less for your entire visit. If you can, try to pack all your essentials in a carry on. This way, there is less hassle and you don’t have to spend time at baggage claim or providing proof that the luggage on its way to Egypt is really yours.

Familiarize Yourself With Your Destination. When you’re planning on vacationing for a long weekend, the last thing you want to do is waste time in your hotel room looking at a map trying to figure out where you should go to first. If you’re renting a car, make sure you know the best routes to take from your hotel and back. Knowing more about your destination will also help you decide what restaurants to go to and even what airport to choose. Taking a cheaper flight at a smaller airport may look good for your wallet, but it may cost more time traveling from the airport to the hotel.

When you have only a few days to take a break from the daily grind, make sure it’s worth it and do your planning ahead of time. This is the best way to ensure that you enjoy your next weekend getaway.
