By planning your vacation to Hilton Head this fall, you can show off your artistic side. That’s the time of year when the island not only explodes in all the colors of nature, but thanks to a special biennial event, the colors of artists’ imaginations, as well.
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry will present the 2015 Public Art Exhibition at the beautiful Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn on Hilton Head Island. The Exhibition showcases 20 large-scale outdoor sculptures by local and national artists. The full exhibition, comprised of at least 20 pieces, takes the viewer “Around the Horn,” a nearly mile-long trail on the grounds of Coastal Discovery Museum. With views and access to two boardwalks onto Jarvis Creek and on Calibogue Sound, the path meanders through woodlands, planned gardens, a butterfly shed, beehives, as well as historic and contemporary structures along the edge of the creek. The path is lush and informal and may be picked up at any point and followed to a work of interest, for close examination and contemplation. It is an experience that combines art, nature and a built environment in a context of discovery-rich culture.
A nationally recognized jury has been assembled to review the pieces and select one for purchase to be installed on Hilton Head Island. The sculptures are created in a variety of mediums from aluminum to wood, bronze to marble and represent a variety of styles from literal to abstract. Most, if not all of the pieces are available for sale to the public, with a portion of any proceeds collected to be used to fund future Public Art Exhibitions. Guests will be able to cast a vote for their favorite piece onsite or through the Exhibitions website – www.hhipublicart.org. The Peopleʼs Choice winners will be awarded cash prizes and special recognition during the announcement event in mid-November.
In addition, there will be many educational and community events scheduled during the three month period. Examples include a curator-guided tour of the sculptures and educational opportunities for adults and youth.
