Becoming part of a community can be a wonderful thing – especially if you’re new to the area, or even just visiting. And that’s how local festivals can make you feel at home… even if home is thousands of miles away.
For instance, on September 19 and 20, Madison’s Willy Street will once again become the city’s largest block (actually 3 blocks) party with seven music stages, a multitude of impromptu street performances, fantastic foods and drinks from across the globe, fabulous arts and crafts, a legendary parade and an irresistible community raffle.
Kicking things off will be the return of the Saturday Willy Warm-up from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the 900 block of Williamson St. This year, there will be 3 stages; the World Music Stage, the Folk Stage and the DJ Stage for those who like to look, listen and, most importantly, dance, dance, dance. All the great food and original crafts that visitors expect from the traditional Sunday event is on hand, just in smaller doses.
Sunday’s festivities begin with the wild, wacky and colorful parade sponsored by the Greater Williamson Area Business Association at 11 a.m. After 8½ hours of fun, great music, food, beverages and visiting, the Fair will end at 7 p.m. after the much anticipated raffle drawing. This year, there will be nearly 150 vendors lining the street and five fantastic music stages throughout the day. The music will include prominent artists from all over the world as well as hot local and regional bands.
As the event is described in the alt-weekly Isthmus, “There is something marvelous and dreamlike about the Willy Street Fair — for the make believe seems real. Children…traipse about happy, in an environment of camaraderie and splendor, removed from the digital grind of video games and the judgment of schoolyard bullies. They can be who they want to be and indulge in the imagination.”
So if you’re interested in a fantastic day of great music wherever you turn, meeting old friends, making new ones, enjoying great food and crafts from around the world, and having a beer or two, the Willy Street Fair is the place to be and be seen!
