Banner Elk, NC: 8 days / 7 nights Peppertree Blue Ridge Village

Kayaking

Banner Elk, North Carolina: This rural destination is the ski capital of the south, home to skiing and snowboarding in the winter and hiking, whitewater rafting, golfing and fishing in the summer. Set in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this countryside escape dotes on visitors with southern hospitality.

Biltmore House

Peppertree Blue Ridge Village features the best of North Carolina’s mountainous high country and is only 20 minutes from the town of Boone, supposedly once a campsite of pioneer Daniel Boone. This cozy retreat will keep the whole family busy with an indoor pool, sauna, exercise room, basketball courts, lakefront beach with boating and fishing, miniature golf, tennis and volleyball. Units are equipped with fireplaces and shopping is nearby.

Although your lodging will be abundant in entertainment, the real draw is breathing in the crisp outdoor air. For the skier, there are two main slopes to choose from: Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain. Another newer option is snow tubing at Hawks’ Nest, the largest all-tube park on the East Coast.

The largest lake in the area, Watauga Lake, is about half an hour out of town. Boating, fishing and wake boarding are popular activities there. If you’re lucky enough to be in Banner Elk on the third weekend in October, you can watch the caterpillar races at the annual Woolly Worm Festival. During the summer, you can attend a dramatization of Daniel Boone and other mountain settlers called “Horn in the West” in an outdoor amphitheatre in Boone. Any stay should also include an hour trip to Asheville to tour art districts, sip drinks at local wine bars or coffee shops, and visit the 250-room Biltmore House, America’s largest home.

This vacation experience mixes a pleasurable amount of relaxation with exercise and quirky entertainment. It’s sure to delight the entire family.

Maui, HI: 8 days / 7 nights Sands of Kahana

Iao Needle

Maui, Hawaii – The sunny, oceanfront town of Lahaina is located on the Hawaiian island of Maui, which Condé Nast Traveler’s have pegged the “Best Island” for seventeen years. The Sands of Kahana offers visitors the epitome of tropical paradise.

It borders Kahana Beach between the famous Kaanapali and Kapalua resorts. All units feature color cable TV/VCR, full size/fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, ceiling fans, free parking, and more. Guests enjoy tennis, pools, a spa, a restaurant, a bar, barbecues, an activities center, live entertainment, scuba diving, fishing and much more. Sands of Kahana is also located near a few championship golf courses.

Wo Hing Temple

Lahaina is on the National Register of Historic Places, once serving as the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a whaling village and a plantation settlement. Whale sighting tours are available, and the channel of the coast is the best place in the world to spot humpback whales. Take a self-guided tour along the Lahaina Historic Trail to see sites such as the “stuck-in-irons house” and the Wo Hing Temple.

Haleakala

Not surprisingly, Maui is a favorite ecotourism site. The Kula Botanical Gardens showcase orchids and bromeliads, and Iao Valley State Park harbors acres of rainforest and the Iao Needle, a 1,200-foot rock covered in green vegetation. A breathtaking experience is watching the sunrise above the clouds from the peak of Haleakala. Numerous farms and ranches also produce fresh, sustainable foods, including coffee from the mountainsides.

Sugar Cane TrainThere are plenty of activities for families. Take a ride on the Sugar-Cane Train, wander through the aquarium tunnel at the Maui Ocean Center or swing your hips at hula lessons. Even venture out to the Hana Highway, a skinny, winding road through Maui’s untouched mountainsides and seascapes.

Hana Highway

Don’t miss out on Maui’s rich artistic heritage at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center. Back in Lahaina, enjoy many art galleries and join in Art Night on Fridays.

With gorgeous beaches, perfect weather, a humbling landscape and fascinating culture, Maui is truly an escape from everyday life.
